LED Display Viewing Distance: Formula & Data Guide
Why viewing distance matters
Get too close and you see pixels. Stand too far and you miss details.
The right distance makes your LED display look clear and professional.
This guide helps you pick the correct screen for your space. It saves you money and prevents mistakes.

Three easy formulas
You don’t need special tools. Just these three formulas used by engineers worldwide.
Formula 1: Minimum distance (no visible pixels)
Minimum viewing distance (meters) = Pixel pitch (mm)
Example: A P5 screen needs at least 5 meters. Any closer and you will see individual dots.
Formula 2: Best viewing distance (for video)
Optimal distance = 1.5 to 2 times screen height
For text or data displays, use 1.0 to 1.2 times screen height.
Example: A 4 meter tall screen works best from 6 to 8 meters away for video content.
Formula 3: Recommended screen height
Best screen height = Viewing distance ÷ 1.8
Use this when you already know where your audience will stand. Perfect for storefronts, museums, and lobbies.
Pixel pitch & corresponding viewing distance reference table
Match pixel pitch to your viewing distance. Start here.
| Pixel Pitch | Minimum Viewing Distance | Optimal Viewing Distance | Main Application Scenarios |
|---|---|---|---|
| P1.2 / P1.5 | 1.2m – 1.5m | 1.8m – 4m | Museum exhibition cabinets, high-end meeting rooms |
| P2.0 / P2.5 | 2.0m – 2.5m | 3m – 6m | Corporate lobbies, exhibition halls, transparent LED screens |
| P3.0 / P4.0 | 3.0m – 4.0m | 4.5m – 8m | Retail storefronts, medium-sized indoor public areas |
| P5.0 / P6.0 | 5.0m – 6.0m | 7.5m – 12m | Airport terminals, shopping mall corridors, semi-outdoor displays |
| P8.0 / P10.0 | 8.0m – 10.0m | 12m – 20m | Outdoor billboards, building curtain walls |
| P16.0+ | 16m and above | 24m – 40m | Large outdoor landmarks, highway roadside screens |
How to choose your LED display?
Follow these four steps. No guesswork.
Step 1: Find your closest viewing distance
Measure the shortest straight line from your screen to where people stand or walk. This sets the upper limit for pixel pitch.
Step 2: Match pixel pitch using Formula 1
Minimum distance equals pixel pitch. To be safe, choose a slightly smaller pitch. This gives you room for closer viewers.
Step 3: Calculate ideal screen size
Use Formula 3: height = viewing distance ÷ 1.8. Then pick a 16:9 or 4:3 ratio based on your wall space.
Step 4: Adjust for content and lighting
- Lots of text, go one step smaller in pixel pitch
- Bright sunlight, increase pixel pitch for higher brightness
Real-life examples
See how it works in actual projects.
Museum transparent LED screen
Visitors stand 1.5 meters away.
They watch videos and read exhibit text. Use P1.5 pitch. Screen height = 1.5 ÷ 1.8 = 0.8 meters.
Transparent film screen works best.
Retail storefront display
People on the sidewalk watch from 5 meters away.

Choose P5.0 pitch. Height = 5 ÷ 1.8 = 2.7 meters.
Get a high‑brightness indoor wall.
Outdoor building facade
The closest viewer is 18 meters away across the street.
Pick P16 outdoor screen.
Make sure it is weather resistant.
Common mistakes
Mistake: Smaller pitch is always better
No. Smaller pitch costs more, uses more power, and runs hotter.
If your audience never gets closer than 5 meters, a P4 looks the same as a P2 but costs half as much.
Pick what fits your distance.
Mistake: Only resolution matters
Resolution is important. But brightness, refresh rate, and color also affect what people see.
Use the formulas as your base, then adjust for light and environment.
Frequently asked questions
What is viewing distance for an LED display?
It has two parts. Minimum distance (no visible pixels) from Formula 1. And optimal range from Formula 2 – 1.5 to 2 times height for video, or 1.0 to 1.2 times height for text.
What is the minimum viewing distance?
The closest point where you stop seeing individual pixels. Formula: minimum distance (meters) = pixel pitch (mm).
Final tips for your project
- Use the three formulas before asking suppliers for quotes
- Share your calculated distances with your LED vendor
- Ask for a physical sample and test it at your minimum distance
- Add 20% safety margin for crowded places like museums or trade shows
Viewing distance is the fastest way to cut costs and avoid bad results.
Master these three formulas, use the table above, and you will pick the right LED screen for any lobby, store, or outdoor sign.
